Extended Reality and Immersive Communication Industry Community (XR&ICom IC)

Motivation

The vision of merging the physical and digital worlds, eXtended Reality and Immersive Communications (XR&ICOM IC) as well as the associated key framework of Digital Twins have gained significant prominence across various domains, including wireless communications. This Industrial Community aims to explore and disseminate XR&ICOM IC enhancements of communication networks and physical environments. 6G will greatly enhance many XR&ICOM IC use cases. DT use cases will be enabled by an accurate, high spatial resolution and real-time digital representation of the physical world, coupled with sophisticated information processing and immersive interaction capabilities. The virtual software-based Radio Access Network (RAN) has become the emerging architecture for wireless networks, while a sophisticated site-specific modelling of the physical world is crucial to provide a highly accurate and real-time representation of wireless connections. By seamlessly integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) frameworks into the Digital Twins of wireless communications, we can leverage massive quantities of generated data to train autonomous agents that will provide control and inference in future networks. As we move into the 6G era, these data will include “network as a sensor” based insight. Future communication systems will offer remarkable accuracy and unprecedented speed, enabling us to push the boundaries of latency, reliability, capacity, energy, and spectral efficiency as well as Quality of Service. The Digital Twins of Wireless Communications will empower academia and industries to unleash the potential of Cloud and AI native networks and 6G system research, design, and development. This Industry Community will explore benefits and opportunities of XR&ICOM IC across the various sectors it serves. We look forward to discussing and exploring ways to make the opportunity real and beyond technology choice, make the system trustworthy, measurable, explainable, and viable, driving towards an intelligent and autonomous wireless communication system of the future.
